The word Reiki is Japanese and is pronounced ray kee. It is usually translated as “universal life-force energy” or “spiritual energy.” It is made up of two words, Rei and Ki. Rei can be translated as “wisdom and knowledge of all the universe” or “atmosphere of the divine.” Ki is the life-force energy flowing through all living things. In Japan the word Reiki is used to describe all forms of healing that utilize spiritual energy. However, in the western world we use the word Reiki to describe a specific form of healing that was developed by a Japanese Buddhist priest named Dr. Mikao Usui (1865-1926). Dr. Usui developed this healing practice through many years of study and meditation. He discovered a way of accessing this spiritual energy and how to pass the ability onto others. He founded Usui Reiki Ryoho, which means the Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method, which is what is widely called simply Reiki.

When Reiki is practiced, the spiritual energy is guided through the practitioner to themselves or someone else. The practitioner does now make this energy or draw energy from someone else. They act as a conduit for the Reiki energy to flow through into whoever or whatever they are focusing it on.
